Pregnancy ultrasound
An pregnancy ultrasound or USG is a common diagnostic modality used in all specialities of medicine. It uses high frequency waves to create a two dimensional image of body tissues and organs. Almost all women subjected to at least one USG scan during their pregnancy stages.
Thereafter, a trans-vaginal probe inserted into the vagina and the ultrasound scan done. After 12 weeks of pregnancy, the uterus becomes an abdominal organ hence abdominal USG performed. No preparation is required for a trans-vaginal procedure. Having a full bladder dramatically improves the image quality and hence diagnostic accuracy of the USG.
Ultrasound is one of the safest modalities of investigation during pregnancy.
Threatened or suspected abortions are the best diagnosed by USG. The tubes also imaged simultaneously to rule out pregnancy. Apart from diagnosing miscarriage in early pregnancy, during mid pregnancy, USG used to monitor the growth of the baby and look for any congenital malformation.
The use of ultrasound scanning in pregnancy referred to as Obstetric Ultrasound. In some countries, routine pregnancy ultrasound scans that performed to identify potential defects before birth.
Research indicates that pregnancy ultrasound is safe for the unborn child, unlike radiographs, which use ionizing radiation. Real-time scanners form a continuous picture of the moving fetus on a monitor screen. Recurring ultrasound beams scan the fetus and reflected back onto the same transducer.
